Prof. (Dr.) Kalyan Kumar, FIE (I), FIPHE (I)
 
Born on November 3rd , 1954, he obtained B.Sc., M.Sc. & Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from B.I.T. Sindri (Ranchi University), University of Saskatchewan (Canada) and Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad in ’76, ’83 & ’91 respectively. Guided Doctoral & Post Graduate Theses in a wide range of topics in power systems, control & instrumentation, and reliability engineering, including SCADA and microprocessor applications in power plants, coal mines and automated processes. Served in various capacities at the Central Mining Research Institute, Dhanbad; Hindustan Insecticides Limited, Rasayani-Mumbai;  University of Saskatchewan, Canada; and Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad before joining the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology (NERIST) on June 2, 1997 as a Professor in Electrical Engineering. Held the offices of Chairman, NERIST Entrance Examination; Head of Electrical Engineering; Dean (Planning & Development ) and Professor-in-Charge (Training & Placement) before being appointed as Director / Vice Chancellor, NERIST (Deemed University) in 2005.
 
Prof. Kumar joined Vinayaka Missions Group as Director (Academic & University Affairs) on September 6th , 2010 to promote R&D and industry related academic activities  as the Chairman of Managing Committee of  the Centre for Innovation & Excellence. He has contributed to the conduct of NonFormal Technical & Vocational Courses for underprivileged, disadvantaged and economically backward grass-root children for their gainful employment. Presently he is the Vice Chancellor of the Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University, Gangtok.
 
As the Director, NERIST he was assigned by the Ministry of H.R.D., Govt. of India to establish the Central Institute of Technology (CIT) at Kokrajhar in Assam in 2006. At CIT, he was both the founder Chairman – BoG and O.S.D. during 2006-08. Further, the Ministry of H.R.D., Govt. of India appointed him in 2007 to draft the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the establishment of Ghani Khan Choudhury Institute of Engineering & Technology (GKCIET) at Malda in West Bengal in memory of Late A.B.A. Ghani Khan Choudhury, a great visionary and politician from the Eastern India. Prof. Kumar had significant contribution in drafting the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) Memo and the Cabinet Note for GKCIET – Malda resulting in grant of CCEA approval on November 20, 2008. He was also instrumental to acquiring 101 acres of land for GKCIET – Malda-based on which the Govt. of India brought out a notification dated February 18, 2010 to establish GKCIET – Malda. Students of the first batch started attending classes from August 2010 at the GKCIET – Malda. Earlier Prof. Kumar had drafted the DPR for establishment of the Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic, Itanagar with the grants-in-aid from the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India. He was the Chairman, BoM for the Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic, Itanagar during 2007-08.
 
Prof. Kumar has contributed about 140 research papers in national / international journals and seminar / conference proceedings, and carried out a number of research and industrial consultancy projects besides organizing seminars / conferences / workshops / short courses. He has been consistently reviewing papers for national and international journals, and representing a number of expert groups including Govt. and other Departments. He was honored with the ‘Rashtriya Gaurav Award – 2004‘;  ‘Life Time Achievement Award – 2006‘; and ‘Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award – 2011’.
